Why this pattern library?
As online shopping proliferates and becomes deeply ingrained in our daily lives, its impact on society and the planet will continue to grow.
- Financial strain: Deceptive or persuasive e-commerce interfaces push customers to spend beyond their means.
- Mental health: Financial worries from overspending, combined with increasing clutter in homes, weigh on people’s mental well-being.
- Climate crisis: Today’s excessive consumption depletes our limited natural resources and releases CO2 and other pollutants that drive climate change.
- Social impact: Many workers suffer in poor conditions to product low quality, cheap items sold online.
Online shopping is here to stay and will continually require UX/UI design. As designers, it is crucial that we recognize our role and responsibility in promoting sustainable product choices and mindful consumption through thoughtful design.
We collected examples from brands that already implemented sustainable e-commerce practices. We grouped these examples into recurring patterns. The goal with this library as to be a source of inspiration for sustainable e-commerce design.
